Sustainable House at Barrett

The Sustainable House at Barrett (SHAB) is a student organization registered with ASU. Students from SHAB have worked with Barrett in the past to create a hall in the new Honors complex dedicated to sustainable living and education. The new Honors Complex will open in the fall of 2009 and will, among other things consist of two buildings linked together that combined will house roughly 150 people. These buildings will be the Sustainable House at Barrett.

Students involved with SHAB continue advocacy and research on the green design for the new Honors College. The current plans for the Sustainable House at Barrett in the new Honors College include space for 150 students, LEED Silver certified building design, shaded courtyard, classroom and extra lounge space, varying room styles to accommodate students of all years and needs, operable windows, individualized thermostat control, behavioral feedback monitors for floor and some individual resource use, dual flush toilets, and roof top access to a 1300 square foot green roof.

SHAB has also reserved Irish C (a 50 person hall) for the 2008-2009 school year. This will serve as the home of the students involved in SHAB until the new Honors College is completed. Anybody who is interested in sustainability is welcome to live with us in Irish C next year. Students who live in Irish C in the 2008-2009 school year will help plan and participate in a range of sustainability and community oriented activities such as cooking nights, recycling challenges, hikes, movie nights, and field trips. They will further educate themselves and others on ways to reduce waste, save resources and energy.
