 Best of America

  • Reader’s Digest magazine selects Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University for their "Best of America" cover feature, a celebration of extraordinary people, places and innovations that demonstrate excellence in America. The article lists Barrett as one of three honors colleges that offer "an Ivy League-style education minus the sticker shock." Barrett continues to receive national recognition most recently in the Wall Street Journal and New York Times.


  • Barrett tops Princeton, Stanford and Yale in the number of national merit scholars recruited to the university. Barrett students benefit from a 10 million dollar endowment to the college used to support honors students and their projects.


  • American Campus Communities in conjunction with ASU is building a multi-million dollar state of the art honors college at the southeast corner of the Tempe campus. The new Barrett College and residential community is scheduled to open in Fall 2009. It features a dining center, LEED certified sustainable living and learning community, outdoor amphitheater for teaching, and an honors student center.


  • Barrett has the largest assembly of honors college faculty and staff which means we are able to direct many resources to the honor experience at ASU; Barrett faculty and staff receive multiple university teaching and service awards


  • The Lorraine W. Frank Office of National Scholarship Advisement encourages students to apply for national and international scholarships. From 1991 to 2007 ASU has 99 Fulbright grants, a success rate almost double the national average; 35 Goldwater Scholars, recognizing outstanding undergraduate achievement in the sciences and engineering, and 14 Truman Scholars, rewarding public service and academic achievement. In addition, the tendering of twelve Marshall Scholarships for postgraduate study in the United Kingdom is one of the best records among public universities in the nation. Three students have been awarded Rhodes Scholarships since 1995.


  • Barrett students participate in study abroad programs that enable them to travel to foreign countries, enjoy small classes taught by Barrett faculty, and experience different cultures and societies while earning honors credits. Barrett Summer Abroad destinations include: Paris and the Loire Valley; Athens, Crete and Rome; Russia; and China.


  • Barrett students support local, national and international communities by participating in student organizations and activities that support a large variety of service projects. Some students mentor local children in underprivileged communities, others raise funds at the annual College Council Concert for the Hungry and some mentor refugees from Somalia, or work with Habitat for Humanity to rebuild homes in Mexico and New Orleans.


  • Barrett students secure internships on Wall Street, work in the Governor’s office, publish poetry in the honors literary publication LUX, work with faculty on research projects to discover for example, the latest developments in Nanotechnology at the Bio Design Institute. They have the opportunity to meet and dine with nationally recognized leaders in their field like Justice Sandra Day O’Connor and upcoming Centennial lecturer Anna Quindlen.
