Alumni Engagement - Volunteer Opportunities

The following are some Barrett Honors College Volunteer Opportunities:
- Third Readers: As an honors student prepares his or her thesis or creative project, you can become a valuable part of the process as a third reader. The third reader is a volunteer who represents the BHC in interacting with the student during the final stages of thesis preparation. The third reader reads the thesis draft, proposes changes, poses questions, and participates in the oral defense. Being a third reader is one way that alums outside the Valley can make a meaningful contribution to the BHC program, as long distance third reader participation can be arranged. Alumni, themselves thesis survivors, bring a special perspective and support capability to the process. We try to match our third readers with theses in areas of special interest. Note that you need not be an expert in a given area; perhaps you just have a desire to learn more about a particular topic! For more information, contact JWill.Roberts@asu.edu.
- Mentoring: Many students at the Barrett Honors College are interested in mentoring opportunities with alumni. Mentoring matches are usually career-based, but many current students are looking for an opportunity to be paired with a Barrett Honors College alum to guide them through the college experience. Contact Elizabeth.Weese@asu.edu .
- The Pre-Law initiative: Because of the commitment of a very dedicated core of BHC alumni attorneys and law students – under the leadership of alumni network board member Jim Tucker and faculty member Dr. Mike Stanford -- in Fall 2003 we launched the beginning of a very inclusive and ambitious pre-law mentoring program for our current students. Under the guidance and oversight of these alumni volunteers, this program features the following activities:
- A September happy hour alumni mixer (attorneys and law students) with the BHC’s dean, Dr. Mark Jacobs
- A full schedule of law school information panels throughout the fall and spring semesters
- A mock law school class for BHC pre-law students
- Shadow days
- Courthouse tours
- Internship and externship opportunities
- Lunches and dinners with BHC students interested in attending law school
As part of the program, a BHC Alumni Network Attorney/Law Student Directory was developed, providing the opportunity for pre-law students to connect with alums and for attorney/law student alums to connect with each other. This resource can be purchased in Irish A Room 125 for $5.00.
The Pre-Law initiative fully supports the BHC Alumni Network’s mission to support the activities and programs of the Barrett Honors College and enhance the honors experience by being mentors and resources for current students and helping connect alumni to the college.

- Internships: If your place of employment is in need of interns, there is no better place to turn than to the Barrett Honors College, where many students are interested in internship opportunities to grow and develop their skills. For more information on internships, contact Jill.Johnson@asu.edu.
- Student Recruitment: Now more than ever, prospective students appreciate receiving many different perspectives about the Barrett experience. Your insight as an alum is very important as the Barrett Honors College continues to recruit top students from around the country. Whether it is speaking to a group of prospective students, being available to contact them via e-mail or through a telephone call, or joining the Dean Jacobs in co-hosting a dinner or reception with prospective students and their families in your area, your role in student recruitment is very important. If you would like to assist with this effort, please contact Elizabeth.Weese@asu.edu .
