Summary: Barrett, The Honors College is pleased to announce the 2008 summer study abroad to China. Specifically designed for students with no specialized background, this program provides a comprehensive introduction to China’s traditional civilization, as well as the dynamic changes globalization has induced. Visiting seven distinct regions, participants will experience all aspects of Chinese life: palaces and pagodas; skyscrapers and nature preserves; industry and art. Special emphasis will be placed on meeting locals and giving students a chance to reflect on China’s challenges and prospects first hand.
Locations:
Beijing (May 18-26) The Forbidden City, Great Wall, 2008 Olympic Village, Tiananmen Square, Temple of Heaven.
Xian (May 26-29) Terra Cotta Warriors, Great Mosque, Medieval City Walls.
Sichuan Province (May 29-June 6) Chengdu City, Buddhist and Taoist Holy Mountains, Panda Research Center, Juizhaigou Waterfall Park.
Guilin (June 6-9) Spectacular Karst Formations, Li River Cruise.
Shanghai and Environs (June 9-16) Bund and International Business and Banking Centers, Shanghai Museum, Hangzhou’s West Lake, Suzhou’s Silk Industry
Hainan Island (June 16-19) China’s “Hawaii,” Pearl Industry, Tropical Agriculture
Hong Kong (June 19-21) Victoria Harbor, Kowloon Merchant’s District
Eligibility: Applications with a $400 deposit ($50 refundable) are due by Feb. 7, 07. However, enrollment is limited and students are very strongly encouraged to register once online sign up is announced.
Academics: Students will receive six ASU credits. All students must enroll in the two cross-listed honors/global studies seminars:
~ HON 394/SGS 394 China and the West: 1700 to the Present (Pickus)
~ HON 494/SGS 494 Globalization in Contemporary China (Wang)
Accommodation: Students will be housed, double-occupancy, in four-star hotels.
Cost: The cost of $4740 (subject to possible change) includes round trip airfare to and from LA; all travel within China, including seven inland flights and one luxury train journey; all lodging; all scheduled academic, educational and cultural programs, including admission fees; all local guides and an average of two meals a day. Not included is ASU tuition, transportation to and from LA, passport and visa fees, course books and personal expenses.
