Barrett Computer Lab and Support
Barrett Honors College students have access to a state of the art computer lab facility within the honors living and learning community complex. A full-time technical support analyst senior monitors the lab, which is staffed by honors students who assist their peers in navigating audio, video, music and graphics programs. The technical support analyst senior teaches two computer animation courses using Alias / Wave Front Maya 6.0. The lab is open Monday through Thursday 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 12 - 5 p.m. and Sunday 12-10 p.m.

The Barrett Honors College computer lab features highly sophisticated high power computers that range from single processor 2.8 GHz cpu's to a quad Zeon 550 graphics work station that has the ability to capture video, edit in a non--linear fashion, and export back to tape. At the start of the Fall 04 semester we added another high powered station that will be used for video capture and animation rendering purposes. This unit contains a 3.1 GHz Hyper Threat processor and one of the industry's leading video cards that allows output to two monitors and an NTCS monitor simultaneously. This station also encompasses a Mini DV/SVCR deck attached with the capabilities of capturing video and audio.

All of the software in the Barrett Honors College laboratory is updated on a yearly basis and maintained with the most current software version available. Most academic disciplines are represented in the software found in our lab. For example, we have advanced modeling software that allows chemistry students to see how two molecules look combined and for the music student there is a keyboard with editing and creation software. We also have the industry leading commuter animation/visualization software called Alias|Wavefront Maya. The Barrett Honors College offers two computer animation courses for upper division honors credit. For more information on this classes please see below. The Barrett Honors College computer lab also features a suite of Adobe products and programming software that includes Visual basic, J++, C++, and access to the MSDN libraries for help with all programming languages. In addition, we have a digital still and motion camera available for check-out from the administration building Irish A 225 (free of charge). In the same room we also have a 36" color poster printer available to students living in Center Complex; it prints photo quality posters up to 100' long. This printer can be used for class posters or just to print a poster for your room. Although there is a charge to use this printer our fees are less than anywhere on campus and drastically less than anywhere off campus.
