Andes and Amazon Field School
NO BRIGHT LIGHTS.
NO BIG CITIES.
BUT NIGHTTIME SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE NEVER HEARD THEM BEFORE.
Join us this summer in Ecuador for the honors section of the Andes and Amazon Field School ( http://andes.asu.edu/). In a special program (one or two sessions) for sophomore, junior or senior honors students contemplating their thesis or post-graduation study abroad, Drs. Ted Humphrey, Janet Burke and Tod Swanson will be working with students on special projects that can serve as springboards into a thesis.
And what interesting theses can come out of the jungle! The field school is located on the River Napo, not far from the provincial capital of Tena, which the guide books describe as a town looking like Indiana Jones’s jumping off place. The area offers truly unusual opportunities to work on issues of ecology, sustainability, religious studies, plant biology, art, education, political science, health care, indigenous cultures, watershed management, economics, and languages. The possibilities are really quite endless, and the instructors are committed to working individually with each student in relationship to his or her interests.
There will be no average days. One interesting feature of this program is that students wake up not really knowing what the day will bring. Scholars from throughout Latin America visit the field school regularly, oftentimes on short notice. One day, one may find oneself listening to indigenous narratives about traditional cultural life, and the next day one may find oneself tramping through the forest identifying plants, animals, and birds. Nonetheless, students will be able to take a variety of courses that offer unusual learning opportunities.
